Sustainability Plan

Our Vision

We believe our children and our community has the right to food, health, and education and to lead productive lives. As the most important Manyatta is our Maasai community, our vision is to become a thriving community with healthy and educated residents that can continue to embrace and share our rich traditions. We hope to serve as a model and inspiration to the rest of our people. We envision a self-sustainable community with alternate income generating activities that help us successfully address current and future challenges.

Our Goals

Generate Income

Income will be key in successfully addressing our key challenges of lack of water, food and sickness. To meet this goal our plan is to implement:

  1. A farm to generate food and income through the sale maize and tomatoes. Seeds, fertilizer, tools and labor for the tractor to prepare the soil has been donated on August 2013.  Our Morans are now working the land!

  2. Trading of goats, sheep, milk and cows, which we hope to eventually buy a few good production seasons.

  3. An active tourist camp with daily and long term visitors to our Manyatta.

Reduce Healthcare Costs

Our second priority is to minimize all costs related to sickness, lack of sanitation and personal hygiene so that more funds are available for food, water and improved living conditions. To achieve our goal of reducing healthcare costs, we will first focus on implementing:

  1. Improved environment inside our homes: Mosquito nets to prevent malaria related cost, fumigation of bed bugs that result in skin infections, less smoke and more ventilation when cooking inside our homes to prevent throat/lung issues and unnecessary burns and accidents.

  2. Improved environment in our Manyatta: Shoes for our children, toilets for all to minimize the spread of disease, basic medicines to tackle basic needs, clean water for cooking, showering and cleaning.

Improved Education

To achieve our goal of a more educated community, we are working on implementing:

  1. A school for our 100 kids not receiving education. Funding has been secured and materials have been bought for classes that have started this September 2013.  Our own Moran Assistant Chief himself and another Maasai teacher started teaching under our new tree set up.

  2. Basic Healthcare & Personal Hygiene Education.  With the help of our community partners, we have started educating our community on family planning and HIV testing and prevention. We hope to continue learning about hand washing, food management, teeth brushing and disease prevention.

  3. Business Planning & Management Education. Also with help from community organizations, we hope to learn basic business skills like goal setting, negotiating, financial management, customer service and tourism management. Education on technology, farming techniques, animal management and drought prevention will also help ensure a better future for our people.

Income Allocation Plan

All self-generated funds, grants and donor funds will be initially used to address our key water, food and health issues. After our current goals have been met, we hope to establish an income allocation plan similar to the plan outlined below to help us plan future infrastructure in addition to our basic needs. The future will hopefully bring more scholarships for our children, the growth of our school and water in our homes, solar lamps, electricity, more toilets and bathrooms and communal washing and cooking facilities.

  • Infrastructure fund: 20%

  • Maro Manyatta school fund: 15%

  • Primary school students’ scholarship fund: 10%

  • High school students’ scholarship fund: 10%

  • University scholarship fund: 5%

  • Healthcare fund: 10%

  • Food/Clothing fund: 10%
